According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more than six million children are reported as abused or neglected each year. Alaska continues to be one of the highest states in the number of child abuse cases. This is something that we must address. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month so this month is a good time to make sure you're familiar with your duties in regards to preventing and reporting child abuse.
APEI's online training provider, SafeSchools, offers many courses on child abuse including Child Abuse: Identification & Intervention and Child Abuse: Mandatory Reporting. They also offer an Alaska specific course on mandatory reporting.
We encourage all of our school district members to review these courses and help prevent child abuse in Alaska. For more information on SafeSchools or how to access these child abuse awareness and prevention courses, contact Cole Cummins at firstname.lastname@example.org or at 907-523-9470.
