One of the most valuable tools an employer can have to prevent employment liability claims are comprehensive policies and procedures to guide the organization in all manner of employment practices. One of the best practices an employer can have is a method for ensuring that the organization’s policies are communicated to all staff. Simply stating that the policies exist and that it is the responsibility of the employee to be familiar and comply with the policies may not be enough. A well-written employee handbook will communicate key organizational policies in a format that employees are more likely to read and understand.

U.S. Department of Labor Publishes New Overtime Rule

On May 18, 2016, the US Department of Labor announced the publication of the final rule updating the overtime regulations of the Fair Labor Standards Act. The monumental changes will mean that an estimated 4.2 million employees in the United States that are currently exempt will become eligible for overtime pay later this year.

Alaska OSHA Expands Reporting Requirements

Alaska has recently updated their workplace accident reporting requirements for employers. On May 17, 2016, Governor Walker signed Senate Bill 148 into law. The legislation expands Alaska’s workplace accident reporting requirements to match federal OSHA standards and even be a little more stringent than the federal requirements.
