Hazard identification is one of the main elements in an effective safety program. OSHA has come out with a fun and easy to use online tool to help employers become more familiar with how to identify hazards. OSHA calls it the Hazard Identification Training Tool. This training tool is an interactive, online, game-based training tool for employers, workers and others interested in learning the core concepts of hazard identification. After using this tool, users will better understand the process to identify hazards in their own workplace.
This tool is intended to:
(1) Teach employers and their workers the process for finding hazards in their workplace,
(2) Raise awareness on the types of information and resources about workplace hazards available on OSHA's website.
One of the scenarios within the training tool is the OSHA Visual Inspection Training. In this scenario, which contains a saw, industrial chemical mixer, scaffolding and fall protection; users learn how to identify hazards on items found in the workplace; become familiar with typical hazard categories; and understand common relationships of hazards to equipment components and operations. This is probably the most useful scenario for APEI members but there are also sections on construction work as well as manufacturing facilities that are very informative.
Go to OSHA’s website at https://www.osha.gov/hazfinder/index.html to use the Hazard Identification Tool and learn how to be more aware of the potential hazards in your workplace.
