Tank Scan

Friday, June 3, 2016

One of the state requirements for school districts to qualify for Capital Improvement Project grant funding is to track your energy consumption, including your fuel consumption. This is a challenge for most school districts but there are now programs and tools to help keep tabs on your fuel usage.

One program, called TankScan, monitors your fuel usage through a micro-impulse radar that is mounted on top of your storage tank and transmits information to a desktop computer. TankScan provides accurate readings of your fuel levels without employees having to climb on top of the tank and read the clock gauges or get hand-dipped readings. This is especially important in the winter months when there is a higher chance for your employees to slip and fall. Another feature in the TankScan program is the ability to detect leaks in your tanks. This is crucial for underground tanks where you cannot visibly see the tank leaking.

The Southwest Region School District recently installed the TankScan system and has been very impressed. The ability to get accurate readings of fuel levels in tanks located throughout the school district sent right to the district office has been very helpful for the maintenance department. The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development was also impressed with the system and thought it was a very helpful tool for Alaska school districts to track fuel consumption.
