October is Cyber Security Awareness Month

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month

In 2004, the Department of Homeland Security designated October as Cyber Security Awareness Month in an effort to raise awareness of cyber security risks and attacks as well as improve responses to such attacks. This year, it’s easy to take part in National Cyber Security Awareness Month by participating in the Department of Homeland Security’s events which are occurring throughout the month. You will find many activities that raise awareness of cyber security and how to prevent cyber attacks in your home and workplace.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, everyone using the Internet at home or at work can help prevent a cyber-attack by taking the following steps:

1.    Use strong passwords you do not share with others;

2.    Update your software regularly to make sure your system is in top condition;

3.    Engage in community dialogue about cyber security;

4.    Limit how much personal information you post online, and use privacy settings to prevent strangers from accessing this information; and

5.    Be cautious about the documents you open or sites you access online.
