APEI Unveils New Loss Control Program
APEI’s loss control experts, Mike and Cecilia Lary, have developed a comprehensive Loss Control Manual and Premium Credit Program, designed to help you create a safe and healthful workplace as well as reduce losses and insurance costs. You should receive your materials soon; let us know if you need more copies.
The new program contains the following key components:
- The seven essential elements of loss control, designed to help members implement effective loss control programs;
- A grant program that allows each member up to $500 per year to help purchase safety equipment or participate in safety training; and
- Loss control premium credits that can reduce next year’s premiums for members who undertake specific safety measures.
The program can reduce costs in two ways: through premium savings (credits), and by improving a member’s loss history rating.
We’re very proud of this new program and we plan to update it annually. Your suggestions are most welcome.
School Safety and Security Checklist Available
In the last few weeks, our attention has been drawn to several high profile school invasions and shootings from around the country. Because they seem so random and unpredictable, such incidents raise concerns about safety in our own school districts. As school and community leaders, we must be aware of the risks faced by our schools and the best practices to reduce or eliminate them.
APEI has developed a School Safety and Security Checklist to help school districts analyze school facilities and district policies related to school violence. While this is only a start, it is designed to help districts review their preparedness for a potential crisis, and identify and implement improvements. You can contact APEI or your broker to obtain the checklist. APEI’s Loss Control Coordinator, Michael Lary, is available to help answer any questions or assist districts in using the checklist and implementing improvements to safety plans.
Darrell Sanborn of Unalaska named Alaska Superintendent of the Year
The Alaska Association of School Administrators (AASA) has announced that Darrell Sanborn is Alaska’s Superintendent of the Year for 2006-2007.
Darrell Sanborn has been Superintendent of the Unalaska City School District, an APEI member district, since 2000. He has also been a principal, a special education teacher, and an itinerant counselor in other rural Alaska school districts over his 20-year period of service to Alaskan schools and communities.
The Unalaska School District enrolls about 400 students in one of Alaska’s most remote and beautiful places. There are two schools, an elementary school and a junior/senior high school. Mr. Sanborn is noted for his attention to students, as stated in one nomination letter, “Not only does he know each student by his or her first name…He encourages students to do their best…also holds each child accountable for their behavior and actions while supporting their efforts to do the right thing."
